EBC to Saga, Saga to Darchen, Tibet 4th/5th May 2025

Today we started our long journey towards Mount Kailash, the holy mountain sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and Bons. One of the main reasons for this trip was Paul's desire to experience the proximity of this mountain. The first leg of this journey was from EBC to Saga where we stayed in another hotel too cold to disrobe.

The following day we drove from Saga to Darchen and were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mount Kailash along the way, and we also made a stop at Lake Manasarovar, the holiest lake in Tibet.

Before leaving the UK we discussed whether to attempt the Kora, a three day pilgrimage around Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva, the Lord of Yoga. But it's high elevation meant we thought it best to instead stay in Darchen and visit Qugu Monastery; a good choice as Lak said 20 to 30 people die every year attempting the Kora. And it was hard enough sleeping in Darchen at 4700 metres (all the hotel rooms in Tibet have oxygen available, as did our car).

Glad you didn’t attempt that climb. I just cannot imagine being somewhere so cold ! Looks incredible though. Lots of love to you both
