Before departing Shigatse (lovely hotel but too cold to undress and shower - this became a common theme), we visited Tashi Lhunpo Monastery founded by the first Dalai Lama and is the traditional monastic seat of the Panchen Lama. We were the only westerners there and apparently one little boy said to his mum "can we follow the white haired people so that I can learn English".

Our long drive took us over the Gawula Pass at 5210 metres before entering the Everest National Park (locally known as Qomolangma National Park).

At the Pass we had our first view of Everest. In Nepal due to perspective, Everest appears to be dwarfed by the surrounding mountains, but here in Tibet, there's a clear view of Everest towering above them. We had to change to an eco bus for a one hour drive to Everest Base Camp at 5200 metres. In Nepal there is no view of Everest from the Base Camp, but here in Tibet we were blessed with a magnificent view of the world's tallest mountain.
